Helen Joy and Aoife O’Brien speak about first time managers, and answer the question: what makes a great manager? Traditionally the role of the manager has been to make sure that stuff gets done, now it is more focused on getting the best out of people. We talk about the key skills required to be an effective manager, such as communication, including setting clear expectations for the role of the manager, emotional intelligence (self-awareness, self-management in particular), flexibility, adaptability, critical thinking and coaching.
